An Introduction to Redox

Redox is a measurement of how strongly soil can accept or give away electrons. It is referred to as redox potential (Eh) and is measured in mV. This transfer of electrons shows up as reduction (increase of electrons) and oxidation (the loss of electrons). This influences soil processes like nutrient cycling, organic matter breakdown, and the activity of soil microbes. Generally, balanced soil is ideal unless you are growing blueberries or rice, which require a reduced and acidic form of soil. This is because extremes in soil can reduce nutrient uptake and microbial life.
