On Wednesday, April 21st, the Organic Council of Ontario (OCO) and Canadian Organic Growers released important new resources to help organic producers become more profitable. The new ‘Cost of Production Model Series’ analyzes the average costs and potential profit of diverse organic enterprises. The resources come with quick calculators and benchmark costs that producers can use to better understand their revenue potential.
More data, better business management
These resources will provide better organic data and will allow producers better business management. The resources compiled financial data from over 30 organic producers and operators from financial statements and personal tax returns to develop rough benchmarks for costs of organic production.
The new resources cover a diversity of enterprises including Organic Dairy, Field Crops, Salad Greens, and Pastured Poultry, and are especially valuable to new entrants, such as young farmers.
This project was funded by the Canadian Agriculture Partnership, a five-year federal-provincial-territorial initiative.
