Senior Organic GardenersOur Three Year Plan and beyond…

Year 1 – the SOG team will offer staff training as needed. Workshops for seniors are planning, planting, maintaining, harvesting, harvest celebrations, feedback and garden clean up for winter. These will help to establish the gardens providing most seedlings and seeds, (NFP only) make periodic visits to note progress, offer advice and some assistance to establish and maintain the project, and be available to address gardening challenges that may arise.

Year 2 – the SOG team will offer staff training as needed. Workshops for seniors are planning, planting, maintaining, harvesting, harvest celebrations, feedback and garden clean up for winter. These will help establish the gardens and provide only part of the seedlings and seeds needed (NFP Only), make periodic visits to note progress, offer advice and some assistance to establish and maintain the project, and be available to address gardening challenges that may arise. Workshops will be limited to topics not covered in Year 1 to topics which the SOG coordinator feels need further elaboration. Residents will be encouraged to do some local fundraising to help pay for organic soil, seeds and fertilizer for the
gardens. The Retirement Homes may be able to assist with these costs where needed.

Year 3 – the SOG team will offer workshops to staff as needed. We will carry out the planning, planting, bi-monthly visits, harvest celebrations, feedback and clean up as in Years 1 and 2 but providing almost no materials free or charge such as seedlings etc. Residents will be encouraged to engage in fundraising to help pay for needed materials.
Year 4 and beyond- The SOG team will be available for advice and occasional visits as needed for information, encouragement.
