Bowmanville Community Organic Garden - Grow Your Own Organic Fruit & Vegetables
The Canadian Organic Growers, Durham Gardeners, would like to extend an invitation to anyone who would like to take part in the Bowmanville Community Organic Garden (BCOG). Founded several years ago through the hard work of COG members, the garden provides space for organizations and individuals who would like to explore nature through the art of gardening.
Valley Plentiful Community Garden, Pickering
The Durham Organic Gardeners also supports the new Valley Plentiful Community Garden in Pickering, Ontario.
Butterfly Garden
COG-Durham also helps maintain a Butterfly Garden on Rossland Road in Oshawa. In partnership with The City of Oshawa and the Durham Region Field Naturalists, the first garden was established in the spring of 2004. A second garden was added in 2006. Besides being a scene of beauty for passersby, these gardens contain plants which provide nectar for butterflies and food for their larvae. Hummingbirds have also been seen visiting the flowers. Most plants were donated by the volunteers from both clubs and, of course, no pesticides or artificial fertilizers are used. If you’re in Oshawa, be sure to drive by! For more information, contact Dianne Pazaratz at 905-433-7875.
Why Garden Organically?
Ask us, "Why garden
organically?" and we will ask you, "Why not?" Since
it is quite possible to garden productively, effectively and attractively
without using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, then why not garden
organically?
That is not to say that organic gardening is just a question of avoiding
these chemical products. Far from it. Organic gardening is feeding
the soil's living creatures so that they can improve soil structure
and fertility, which in turn leads to healthy plant growth. It's recycling,
to prevent loss and wastage of plant foods. It's creating diversity
in the garden, so the chances of one organism getting out of hand
are minimized. It's also a whole lot more, using the best from the
past and taking advantage of the benefits of modern scientific research.
This is where COG comes into play: if you have the fortitude and the
desire to grow your own little garden in a community atmosphere, we
will help you get started the right way and you will be able to see
a difference in yourself. The BCOG is located at the south side of
the Bowmanville High School, on Liberty Street.
